Text Me Your Questions

In this episode of Will Bangura’s Dog Training Today, dog behaviorist Will Bangura explains one of the most important questions in dog aggression and reactivity work: are you correcting aggression, or are you punishing fear?

Many dogs who bark, growl, lunge, snap, or bite are not trying to dominate people or other dogs. They are often responding from fear, anxiety, stress, frustration, or perceived threat. When training focuses only on stopping the outward behavior, the dog may appear more controlled while the underlying emotional distress remains unresolved.

This episode explains why punishment-based methods, corrections, shock collars, prong collars, and intimidation can suppress visible behavior without changing the fear or anxiety driving it.

Topics covered include:

• Why fear, anxiety, and stress often drive aggression and reactivity
• Why suppressing behavior is not the same as changing emotion
• How punishment can make fearful dogs less safe over time
• Why growling, barking, lunging, and snapping are communication
• Why quick fixes often fail with serious behavior problems
• How counterconditioning and desensitization change emotional responses
• Why behavior modification is different from obedience training
• How to recognize when a dog needs professional behavior help
• Why credentials, education, and humane methods matter
• How pet parents can rebuild trust with fearful, reactive, or aggressive dogs

Will also explains why lasting change requires more than control. Dogs with aggression, reactivity, severe fears, phobias, and anxiety need safety, structure, emotional learning, and evidence-based behavior modification.

This episode is especially helpful for pet parents living with aggressive dogs, reactive dogs, fearful dogs, anxious dogs, dogs with phobias, and dogs who have been through correction-based training without lasting emotional improvement.

Hi, I'm Will Bangura, a certified canine behaviorist and the owner of Phoenix Dog Training. I specialize in helping dogs that have severe fears, phobias, aggression and reactivity, and I'm here to share with you some critical information that could make a huge difference for you and your dog. If you're listening to this, you likely have a dog that is showing signs of aggression or reactivity. Maybe your dog's barking, lunging, growling, or maybe it's even biting. It's important to understand that these outward behaviors are just symptoms. The real problem lies beneath the surface, in your dog's underlying emotional state. Aggression is often driven by fear, stress or anxiety. No animal goes into fight or flight unless they perceive something as a threat, and there doesn't have to be a real threat. This is why the right approach to training matters so much. True behavior modification addresses the root cause of the problem your dog's underlying emotional state and the way that they perceive triggers like people, other dogs or specific situations. When we change how your dog feels about these triggers, the aggressive behavior goes away. There's no need for it when your dog doesn't feel that there's a threat.

Unfortunately, many uneducated, uncertified trainers, who have really good intentions, rely on punishment-based methods using shock or prong collars to merely suppress the outward behavior. While this may stop the behavior temporarily, it doesn't solve the underlying problem. In fact, it often makes things worse by adding additional fear, stress and even damaging the bond and trust between you and your dog. Then there's the allure of sending your dog away to a board and train program for one week, two weeks, three or maybe even four weeks. While that may sound convenient, aggression and reactivity can't be resolved in just a few weeks. These are complex issues that require time, patience and expertise require time, patience and expertise. Many pet parents I work with have tried these quick fixes only to see the aggression return time and time again within weeks because the root cause wasn't addressed.

To truly help your dog, you need a professional who understands behavior modification, not just obedience training. A certified canine behaviorist focuses on science-based methods to change your dog's underlying emotional response to triggers. This leads to long-lasting, reliable change without causing fear or pain. Many uneducated trainers with the best of intentions think that they're correcting aggression, when in fact all they're doing is punishing fear.
